We are seeking signatures for a resident concern petition (25 signatures) to request the Fairfax Town Council to consider an EXPIRATION DATE OF 01/01/2024 for the rental protection ordinances, as was suggested by Bruce Ackerman during the regular April meeting. The proposal is meant to ask the TC to set a date certain so the people of Fairfax can work on revising rent protections without all the extreme divisiveness. By keeping the protections in force while we craft a more perfect Union among us, A) the risk of adversity toward existing tenants will be minimized; and B) landlords can execute 12-month leases with a minimized fear of the ordinances as written (as 12-month lease terms would extend to a time beyond the date certain expiration).
SITUATION: Possibility of tenant protections in Fairfax may be REPEALED by ballot measure.
PROBLEM: A BALLOT MEASURE law can only be changed with another ballot measure.
SOLUTION: Repeal the ordinances by EXPIRATION, RETAINING LOCAL CONTROL of our LOCAL tenant protections rather than YIELDING LOCAL CONTROL TO THE STATE.
